The EC postcode is also known as the Eastern Central postal area and is a group of districts in central London. EC1 is actually split up in to several postcodes itself such as EC1A or EC1P. Generally though, the areas it consists of can include, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Clerkenwell, Farringdon, Hatton Garden, Finsbury, St Luke’s and Bunhill Fields, although this is by no means all of them.

Clerkenwell is an area in the Borough of Islington and was once known as London’s Litte Italy due to the number of Italians living in the area. Clerkenwell has monastic traditions as it the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem had its English headquarters in the vicinity of the current site. St John’s Gate, built in 1504, still survives in the reconstructed form of Priory Gate. However, in the late 17th century it became quite the fashionable residential area, with notable residents such as Oliver Cromwell and Erasmus Smith.
Farringdon is also an historic area of within the City of London that intriguingly is separated in to the two Farringdon Wards of ‘within’ and ‘without’. This denotes the split that happened in the 14th century as part of Farringdon was outside the London Wall, whereas other parts with inside.
The district of Finsbury is situated immediately north of the City of London and can trace its etymology back to the 13th century. Now though, its notable institutions include the former Finsbury Town Hall, The Sadler’s Wells Theatre,  Finsbury Estate, Islington Local History Centre, Exmouth Market, Islington Museum and City University.
Situated close to Finsbury is the area of St Luke’s which takes its name from the church on Old Street. However, the name is rarely used today and is generally seen as part of Finsbury itself. Nevertheless, it does play host to Whitecross Street market which has stalls positioned in the street and is open to pedestrians only. There is a small general market every day and a food based market on Thursday and Friday. It also sometimes is the site of food festivals.
