CR is the postcode area the London Borough of Croydon which covers nine postcode districts which are subdivisions of eight post towns which covers some parts of South of London and northeastern Surrey. Croydon was the second town, after Norwich, outside of London that had experimental postcodes introduced in 1966. Basically they put in the letter O so that the postcode became CRO, but it was later decided that postcodes only should have two letters. So CRO became CR, but to let people avoid having to change their postcode CR0 was introduced for the postcode of the central area of Croydon, this is why CR1 never was invented. So Croydon is the only postcode area that has district 0 and no 1.

CR0 is, as said, the only 0 in the UK and has the post town of Croydon – along with CR9 – and has a coverage of Addiscombe, Beddington, Selhurst, Waddon, Shirley, Farestdale, Addington, New Addington and Croydon. Its local authority area is Croydon and Sutton. CR0 is located abot 9.5 miles south of Charing Cross and is one of eleven metropolitan centers in Greater London. It is situated between the south coast of England and London. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as a little village with a mill, a church and about 365 people. It later expanded as a market town and became an important industrial area in the 1900s, known for manufacturing cars and metal working. CR0 was in 1965 amalgamated into Greater London and holds a main station – East Croydon – which is a major hub for the transport system.
